What
a Cover System...
Let
me start by saying I have had a once in a lifetime turkey season.
Three seasons ago I was hooked by my first morning gobble and things
haven't been the same since.
This
year I was blessed by getting permission to hunt some land that had
not been turkey hunted on in four years. I started scouting the ridges
about 3 weeks before season opened, for scratchings and various signs.
I located an area that appeared to be a roosting spot for a few birds.
In
the South East, at the beginning of the season, the woods are still
showing the effects of winter and natural cover is not as plentiful
as it is in the middle of spring. With this being said, the tree,
that just happened to be in the perfect spot, was bare at the bottom
with no bushes close by for cover. I returned to this spot three days
prior to opening day, with my 6 BRANCH COVER
SYSTEM in hand. I strapped the system to the tree, with
the convenient Quick Mount bracket,
and began spreading the limbs where they needed to be. It looked to
be a perfect set up and I felt confident in possibly seeing a few
birds from this spot. Little did I know what lay in store for me the
days ahead.
It
was a much anticipated opening morning. The wind was calm and the
leaves were still damp from a rain shower the previous afternoon.
In a word, PERFECT.
I made my way up the ridge to the tree I had prepared with The
Cover System. Just
as I was about to sit down an Owl Hooted and the woods "LIT UP."
It was music to a turkey hunter's ears. I had four gobblers on roost
within a 100 yd. radius. I settled in to The
Cover System and got
ready within minutes I had a 10" long beard strutting at 30 yds.
and another at 50 yds. They never knew I was there. The bird I harvested
was a 20 lb. Eastern with a 10 1/2" beard and 3/4" spurs,
what a start.
The
following morning went much the same. I was fortunate enough that
a hen had roosted on one side of my blind, while a gobbler was on
the opposite side.
I just sat back and got ready, never even had to call. This big "boss"
gobbler came off the roost and headed straight to his hen. Unfortunately
for him, he walked within 25 yds. of me and my Cover
System. He was a 21 lb., 111/2" beard with 1 1/8"
spurs For me this was already the best season I had ever had, but
it wasn't over just yet.
The
following evening, I persuaded my wife to go with me. This would be
her first turkey hunt. She decided not to take a gun but to observe
instead. We got to the spot about 3:00 pm. I had brought along an
additional 6 BRANCH COVER SYSTEM
with the provided ground stake attached. I wanted my wife and I to
sit by the same tree, so I could attempt to explain what was going
on, as it happened.
With
the first Cover System on the
tree and the second in the ground in front of us, we immediately became
part of our surroundings. I got out my Penn's Woods Premium Glass
call and the New Penn's Woods Water Proof Wizard Box call and started
alternating between the two every so often. In approximately 45 minutes
we could hear the familiar sound of leaves rustling. Because of the
Cover System this bird almost
ran right up in our laps. He was a beautiful Eastern with a 10"
beard and 1" spurs.
WHAT
A SEASON. WHAT A COVER SYSTEM !!!
